Through the Cracks

“There’s a crack in everything.  That’s how the light gets in.” – Leonard Cohen

Upstate NY

December 7, 2016

A fresh, crisp cold air has entered the scene.

Snowfall this week.

Lots of brightness.

White light.

The darkness has been thick lately.

The cold air and clean snow feel right.

My heart is beating: North Dakota,

North Dakota,

North Dakota.

Standing Rock, thank you so much.

I needed you.

We needed you.

Oceti Sakowin Sioux people, we need you.

Lakota Nation, we need you.

First Nations, we need you.

Thank you for reminding us

what true power is.

For reminding us again

that revolution works.

Prayer works.

Nonviolence works.

Courage and tenacity work

and are required.

We need to remember this, for doing so is our greatest power.

“Protect the Sacred” by Aaron Glasson

Watching Standing Rock through the windows of the internet

seeing mythology enacted

a mind-in-decolonization cries out,

“Right the wrong!

Right the wrong!

Right the wrong!”

Time folds upon itself and the past is present

the present is past

and we are demanding a new FUTURE.

Old wounds never addressed

are opening

and infection is being purged out.

The body is healing itself.

We are the body.

Earlier this week, the Obama administration denied Dakota Access permission to complete their pipeline which they have forced through indigenous land,

because people showed up, stood in the way, in prayer, celebrating the truest of true gospels:

And they refused to be moved,

and they continue to do so in the face of unrelenting corporate aggression.

The true warrior way has been accepted on the front lines:

“You can beat me

even kill me

but still I will remain

and a hundred more will come and stand in my name

For my name is Water

and I am Life.”

This is the courage being asked of all of us now as we move into a time of understanding that we are all the front lines,

there is nowhere left to hide from the fight,

and as more and more join together to affirm and acknowledge our shared original lineage to Mother Water and Mother Earth,

and we know that humanity has won a battle here.

Brief?  Surely.

But a moment of triumph nonetheless.

A flash of light.

We live in a war-torn world

with war-torn bodies

and war-torn minds.

This is our civilization’s most consistent tradition.

John & Yoko were right:

fe5860fc4fd60f149cabb43f72693393-1000x1000x1“War is over, if you want it.”

Well, we want it.

And we are getting it.

Battles lie ahead,

with surely greater costs,

and yet, we find ourselves entering into a period of culmination,

the apex epoch of the single, continuous war that has ravaged the human species for millennia, by which all struggles, battles, and conflicts have been encompassed.

This is no traditional fight over territory;

this is no traditional fight between different peoples with different ideas,

and nor is this a battle that can be won with fists or swords or arrows or guns or bombs.

No.  This new time is laying bare the unresolved sickness in the foundation of our civilization, and what is resulting is the fight for the inherent right of the planet for ALL territory to be well, to be free, and to be shared equally and stewarded collectively with great reverence, love, and wisdom.

This is the fight for the heart of humanity,

for all beings to have the possibility of thriving, with clean water and fertile soil and pure air,

to have safety with which to create life, family, art, beauty, and peace,

and to be truly free

no longer operating under imposed and false illusions of freedom.

This is a war that has been waged against the Earth.

This is a war that has been waged against each other.

This is a war that has been waged against our own selves.

Warfare is an internal state of being that is mirrored and manifested into the outer realms.

And so is Peace.

As we walk through this new time,

with the task of embodying and enacting peace on this planet,

more humility, courage, compassion and caliber is needed than ever before,

for now, it is no longer only men and our ideas marching into war,

as if that were not bloody and perverse enough.

No, now, our brilliance and innovation has been used for dark magics and we have manifested true beasts of Empire to join in the fight.

These beasts, or corporations as we have come to know them,

are heartless, man-made Frankenstein machines

with invisible bodies

but alive nonetheless,

blown to life with the breath of nonpresence and disease

and powered with the life force of sleeping men.

These beasts are now in the battlefield,

fighting on behalf of the part of ourselves that knows only destruction,

and we are required to meet them

face to face

and stand unmoved.

One carries poison.

One carries medicine.

Each human heart contains a medicine made potent through countless generations of protection and preservation and fortification.

Now is the time to trust these medicines.

This is the moment for which they have been made.

the Shambala Warriors,

the Medicine People,

the Keepers of the Light,

the Bastard Children of the Empire,

the 7th Generation of Indigenous bloodlines that withstood colonization,

the descendants of the enslaved and the enslavers alike,

joined by those that have gone before,

and those that are yet to come,

we, from all walks and paths and lineages and nations,

unified together as an army of liberation

armed only with the weapons of fierce compassion and insight into the radical interdependence of all things

stand here with one clear mission:

to enter into the very heart of the barbarian powers

those that lie externally

and those that lie within

and dismantle the weapons.

Armies stand guard to protect the Empire,

seeking to keep us from reaching the heart at all costs.

Our message to these forces is clear:

“We carry medicine that the Earth herself has cultivated

to redeem the heart of the human people.

She cannot be stopped in her deliverance.

We are but vessels in her service.

These bodies are temporal,

this medicine is eternal.

The body will heal.

It is has been written.

there is a place for you at our table

if you so choose to join.”

Please, PLEASE do your heart and mind, and humanity as a whole, an incredible service and follow the link below to watch a group of U.S. veterans, led by Wesley Clark Jr., stand in the name of their ancestors and lineages and apologize to the First Nations for a history full of genocide and desecration.  It is one of the deepest, most profound reflections of the healing not only possible, but happening, at this intensely transformative time for the Earth and all her Beings.

The Grandmothers Are Gathering

For 13 years now, the International Council of 13 Indigenous Grandmothers has been holding, carrying, and walking behind a prophetic prayer for humanity and for the next seven generations that will walk upon the Earth.

At the end of this month, they are gathering to complete their work where they first came together to create it in 2004: the Menla Retreat Center in the Catskill mountains, the original land of the Iroquois Confederacy.

On the surface, this gathering is a healing retreat; below the surface, it is the fulfillment of a prophecy.

These women are midwives of a new time for Earth and her people.

They have answered a call to unify our species, across continents and cultures and colors and creeds,

to heal our people and planet so that peace may reign.

We have been so very ill.

For the countless generations now

we have been plundering the Earth

the animal kingdom

plant kingdom

insect kingdom

and our own kingdom.

We have been plundering our elders and our children.

We have been desecrating our bodies

these original temples of the sacred

our minds

these magnificent tools of creation

and the world around us

our home

our refuge

our Mother.

We have been asleep to compassion

and to peace

and our grandmothers have been watching.

Our grandmothers have been praying

They have been enraged

And they have been remembering.

They have held the power of their wisdom and wombs, and they have remained standing in the face of it all.

The prayer of their hearts has been kept alive.

The International Council of 13 Indignenous Grandmothers has acknowledged that we are now approaching a precipice, and that this is the time to unleash that prayer and power.

At the pinnacle of our ignorance and division and greed and sickness,

we can see our unwellness reflected in our minds, bodies, partnerships, families, communities, nations, and civilization as a whole.

Women of this planet, it is you who are the ones that carry life within the waters of your wombs.

It is you who are the walking, talking, breathing avatars of the planet herself

and it is you who are the ultimate healers of our people.

As this council comes together for their last time in this official capacity,

we are invited to witness these women manifesting myth within the physical plane.

This work is a beacon of Light

a revelation beyond hope

that shows us the abundance of transformational healing energies that are available to human beings at this time.

We are now sick and suffering enough to be humble

and being humble is the fundamental requirement to receive.

These grandmothers, and all the women they represent, have carried this prayer and this work as an incredibly powerful offering of service.

They do not carry it only for their own lives

as they do not have many years left here

Grandmother Beatrice Long Visitor Holy Dance

and in fact, one of them, Grandmother Beatrice Long Visitor Holy Dance of the Oglala Lakota Nation,

passed through death into the realms beyond earlier this year.

They are carrying this for us,

those of us that will remain here beyond their bodies.

And they are carrying it for those that have yet to come

those that are coming in through the watery gate between heaven and earth.

As our grandmothers gather to lay down their prayer upon the Earth

we are called to receive it.

We are called to hold it within our own hearts and minds

to carry it forth with our own bodies

with our own actions

with our own words

with our own work.

They have done their part in the fulfillment of the prophecy of peace on Earth;

it is now our turn to do ours.

All are invited, welcome, and encouraged to join us for this gathering, and you will find details of how to do that below.

But for those that cannot join in person

you, too, are needed.

You are needed to receive the prayer

the medicine

the blessings of these women.

The prayer, medicine, and blessings of their mothers and grandmothers,

of every one of our mothers and grandmothers

all the way up our bloodlines

our lineages

right to the origin place

the one well from which we have all come forth.

I invite and encourage all to build an altar within your homes that can serve as a portal of reception.

Build this altar

and then listen

and hear.

Hear the prayers for our healing

the medicine songs

and the very voice and breathe of the Earth herself.

Sit before this altar and pray prayers of thanksgiving for these women

for all womankind

these creatures that no matter what we have done to them over the course of the patriarchy

have continually welcomed us back home

cleaned us off

and nourished us

in the greatest human example of unconditional love and forgiveness.

These beings that God has sent forth to our people to carry a higher vision of humanity

a vision that speaks and lives the truths of balance

and love.

Yes, our grandmothers and their grandmothers and their grandmothers before them have done their part.

Let us come together to say YES to doing ours

not only with words

but with the very essence of our daily lives.

May we do this for our own lives

for the life of our ancestors that dreamt us into existence

for the life of our brothers and sisters of all species and kinds that walk the Earth with us

and for those that will inherit the world we leave behind.

We say YES by making our homes an altar

and our lives a prayer

that will heal our bodies and minds

and strengthen our families and communities

and unify our nations

in order to heal our waters

heal our soils

heal our air

and heal the very beating heart at the center of Life that has continued to carry us through.

Here, now,we say YES.

And thank you.

Alliance Statement of the International Council of 13 Indigenous Grandmothers:

October 13, 2004

We are thirteen indigenous grandmothers who came together for the first time from October 11 through October 17, 2004, in Phoenicia, New York. We gathered from the four directions in the land of the people of the Iroquois Confederacy. We come here from the Amazon rainforest, the Alaskan Tundra of North America, the great forest of the American northwest, the vast plains of North America, the highlands of central America, the Black Hills of South Dakota, the mountains of Oaxaca, the desert of the American southwest, the mountains of Tibet and Nepal and from the rainforest of Central Africa.

Affirming our relations with traditional medicine peoples and communities throughout the world, we have been brought together by a common vision to form a new global alliance.

We are the International Council of Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers. We have united as one. Ours is an alliance of prayer, education and healing for our Mother Earth, all Her inhabitants, all the children and for the next seven generations to come.

We are deeply concerned with the unprecedented destruction of our Mother Earth, the contamination of our air, waters and soil, the atrocities of war, the global scourge of poverty, the threat of nuclear weapons and waste, the prevailing culture of materialism, the epidemics which threaten the health of the Earth’s peoples, the exploitation of indigenous medicines, and with the destruction of indigenous ways of life.

We, the International Council of Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers, believe that our ancestral ways of prayer, peacemaking and healing are vitally needed today. We come together to nurture, educate and train our children. We come together to uphold the practice of our ceremonies and affirm the right to use our plant medicines free of legal restriction. We come together to protect the lands where our peoples live and upon which our cultures depend, to safeguard the collective heritage of traditional medicines, and to defend the earth Herself. We believe that the teachings of our ancestors will light our way through an uncertain future.

We join with all those who honor the Creator, and to all who work and pray for our children, for world peace, and for the healing of our Mother Earth.

For all our relations.

She has Returned

The very first time I heard Bernie Sanders speak, I knew who he was

knew the energy he was representing

knew that he was being fed from the same wellspring of evolving consciousness by which so many of us have been being fed lately on this planet.

This wellspring offers the energy of community

It offers the energy of equality

It offers the energy of love.

In a civilization that values profit about all else

this energy becomes revolutionary

but it is not by nature.

By nature, this energy is evolutionary.

There is only so long that we can continue to stumble blindly upon the Earth

eating her up faster than she can feed us

and creating so much suffering for ourselves, our kin in the community of life, and our future generations.

So it is not only unsurprising,

but also necessary

and expected

that as we approach this inevitable turning point as a species

voices carrying this energy would rise louder than ever before.

Bernie is a prophet.

Many of us are ready for a leader like him.

Many of us have been praying for leadership like his.

But we find ourselves on a cusp in human collective consciousness

and if we really get present

and feel, intuitively, not mentally, the energy of the planet

and the energy of humanity

and the energy of this country

we will likely feel that the tipping point in this change

beyond which we no longer need war

beyond which we no longer need poverty

beyond which we no longer need violence and control

this tipping point has not fully been crossed by the whole of our people.

We are, right now, standing in the crossroads.

What impatient creatures we can be!

And rightfully so, as the very lives and freedom of our brothers and sisters and children are at stake.

When we get a glimpse of where we are going

we want to be there immediately.

But are we here?

Are we present for the path from past to future?

Are we NOW?

For it is from this very place that we are able to be the most potent agents of change.

I advocated and believed deeply in the presidency of Bernie Sanders.

And yet, it has become clear that this is not what the energy of the planet is calling forth at this time.

Not yet.

Today, it is calling forth something else.

Through this election process, my rage and disdain has been provoked by and directed towards Hillary Clinton, probably even more so than Donald Trump, who has been far easier for me to simply dismiss

and I have seen the same in so many of my brothers and sisters.

We all carry a deep, underlying rage for the patriarchy, this imperialist, capitalist, mysoginist, racist captivity we have been inflicting upon ourselves for 1000s of years as a species

and we all carry a disdain for those in the public sphere that appear to embody or represent it.

Many of us have come to expect and even accept seeing this in men

but seeing all of this represented in a woman-bodied human reveals this rage and disdain in a way far more provocative than seeing it represented in male-bodied leaders ever has before.

When a woman

a daughter of the same patriarchy of which we have all been born at this point

stands and reflects these energies

we hate her even more deeply than we do the men we’ve come to expect it from.

I am guilty of this.

And I am sorry.

Hillary Clinton, I am sorry.

Women, I am sorry.

To all my sisters and brothers, I am sorry.

It is now time for us to take altitude

to zoom out and see the larger picture.

What is coming to pass on this planet beneath the surface is the tipping of the scales and the rebalancing of the masculine and feminine energies which have been severely out of balance for millennia.

What is coming to pass is that a woman is going to step into the apex of power of this civilization.

And in the symbolic, archetypal dimension

this step is an unbelievably transformative, powerful, and revolutionary moment.

This is a medicinal moment for humanity.

This statement is not an ignoring of Hillary Clinton’s sins or ignorances or dangerous choices or allegiances

nor is it a free pass for her to lead without continued immense pressure from those of us she leads to make choices that honor life, peace, people, and planet

but even with all of her shadows out in the light

Hillary Clinton is holding within her body right now an apex of the return of the Feminine

a center point of the tipping of the scales back into balance on planet Earth.

We have been praying for this moment

for Her return

the return of Woman to her rightful place in the leadership council of our people.

We have been seeing this prayer being answered in all realms of our society as women have stepped into more and more roles of power

as women leaders in something like 22 nations have stepped into the helm

as countless mothers, sisters, and grandmothers have heeded the call from the Earth and stood up.

Many of us have raised a prayer and called for a grandmother to come and rebalance the scales here, too.

Well my family, she has arrived.

Love her or hate her, a grandmother has arrived and is actually positioned to lead this nation.

How have we received her?

She didn’t show up with an angelic grace

she didn’t show up carrying a lamb

she didn’t show up pure as snow

she didn’t even show up coming around the mountain riding 6 white horses.

And if she did, would she have made it this close to the gate?

She showed up with blood on her hands

She showed up with battle scars

with mistakes made

with lies told

with promises broken.

she did show up.

And we have been turning our backs to her.

We have been scolding her.

We have been shaming her

threatening her

abusing her.

We have been hating her.

The Goddess has many forms.

Woman has many forms.

She has walked through 1000s of years of oppression and dominion and warfare

and she has not come out unscathed.

Not by a longshot.

But she was carried through nonetheless

and she is standing on our door

and now is our time

our opportunity

to welcome her in

with love

and warmth

and celebration.

And with Forgiveness.

For we, too, all have blood on our hands.

And it is only with forgiveness present that she has the opportunity to heal

and it is only with forgiveness present that we have the opportunity to heal

and together go forth and create a new world.

I forgive you Hillary Clinton.

I forgive you grandmother

I forgive you Woman.

I forgive you Man.

I forgive your unwellness

I forgive mine

Madam President, Grandmother Hillary Clinton

What a time to be alive on Earth.

We have much to grieve, much to celebrate, and much work to do.

May we continue to walk behind a prayer for peace, harmony, truth, justice, and love  to reign.

I’m with her.

*Author’s note, added three months after original post, on the eve of the 2016 election:

To think that a woman preaching “peace, people, and planet” could ascend to the presidency of a military-industrialist corporate-oligarchy so steeped in patriarchy that no woman has held the position in its 200+ year history, before a woman that is speculated to have played just as dirty as the men and played by the secret rules of getting ahead in the system, seems truly absurd and deliriously impatient. And when the future female presidents, who actually are openly aligned with peace, people, and planet inevitable arrive, they will surely know they would not have had a chance to walk through the gates unless Hillary Clinton, or some woman just like her, had spent a lifetime being absolutely vilified and hated for being a woman reaching for the highest position in the world, and succeeding. Evidence that no woman could get even remotely this close to the Oval Office without doing every single shady thing Hillary has possibly done in her career is that she is the only woman to have gotten even remotely this close. I am wholeheartedly excited that she will win the election tomorrow, not because I have some delusion that she is going to do all the work for us of defeating the corporate, military stranglehold that our nation suffers from, or elevate our indigenous kin and brothers and sisters of color out of their systemic oppression and into their rightful place in our national family and leadership, but because it is time for women to start leading this nation, and we must start where we are, and where we are is with Hillary Clinton. May she be the first in a long, glorious string of women presidents we elect that will slowly but surely redirect our sick nation into a future of true peace, sustainability, wellness, and freedom.

May peace reign on Earth.

I left Southwestern Utah yesterday after 3 days and nights full of love, beauty, and re-connection, and I am feeling grateful and inspired.

Bonnie & Carlyle, followers and warriors of LOVE

Bonnie & Carlyle, heart followers & warriors of LOVE

I got to St. George, UT on Saturday evening where I was hosted by two stellar tribesfolk, Bonnie and Carlyle.  I met these two beautiful humans through two of their 5 children, Katy and Nickolas, who I worked with when I lived in New York.  They are a big family with a deeply moving story.  I will one day have them tell their story themselves in detail, but the cliff notes version is that Bonnie and Carlyle were both raised in the Mormon church and did their best to be very devoted to their faith and community.  When their eldest son came out of the closet, everything changed for them.  After very brief initial response of wanting to fix him, reflecting their long-held church programming, it was quickly revealed to them that this was not only be fruitless, but also very wrong.  Their love of their child, their empathy with his struggle, their trust in him and in their hearts, quickly turned them from trying to change him to learning to cherish him in an even deeper way than they had before, going against a lifetime of conditioning telling them to do the opposite and going with LOVE.  Being a Mormon is not just something you practice once a week but rather is a complete way of life and complete community, and so the family tried to stay in the church AND reconcile their love and acceptance of their gay son.  This could only last so long… 3 years to be precise.  For those 3 years, they struggled to stay within the community in which they had been so completely a part of, and they struggled to maintain strong relationships with those they had considered close friends and family while doing so.  When California was going through the Prop 8 political battle on whether or not gay marriage was constitutional, the Mormon church inserted itself into the battle, picking up against gay marriage and instructing its members to do the same.  This was the tipping point for Bonnie and Carlyle.  As a father with fierce love for his son, he went to the elders and appealed them to reconsider what they were doing and embrace that it was time for change.  They told him, “You must choose between the prophet and your son.”

“Thank you.  You just made this very easy.”

Bonnie, Carlyle, and their 5 children ended their relationship with the Mormon church.

That was about 7 years ago, and when you hear them tell this story, it moves you to tears, expands your heart, and inspires you to be more courageous in living your purpose.  They talk of love being the ultimate truth and message from the Divine.  They talk of family being the strongest expression of love.  They talk of their liberation from the conditioning they had imposed upon them from childhood, and of what it has been like to explore the world for themselves, and develop their own perspectives and opinions, and to do so allowing their hearts to guide them.  It was not a road without pain or challenge, as in many ways it was a walking away from mostly everything and everyone they knew, but they are shining examples of what happens when we step outside of our comfort zone, outside of the life that has been prepared for us: we find truth, we find deeper love than we could have imagined, we find God, we find ourselves.

So I spent two days with them, talking about vibrational healing, consciousness, spiritually, civilization, wellness, music, art, plant medicine, and family.  Their friend Daniel, who I have come to know as a friend of mine as well, came over for dinner one night and the depths of these conversations went further.  Daniel was raised Mormon too, but at a very young age found himself in total non-resonance with their teachings, and as he discovered his own ‘condemned’ sexuality, he forged a new life for himself in which he could know peace in his heart and with who he is.  This led him to build the World Peace Gardens, whose mission statement reads:

“World Peace Gardens is about creating new levels of community and peace throughout the world.  This is accomplished through the creation of artistically designed gathering places that represent a new vision for humanity. These sites bring people together through gatherings and events which celebrate the uniqueness of the individual and the oneness of all things.”

They gather every Sunday in St. George, UT with different performers and speakers on a very diverse range of subjects and ideas, all somehow woven together with the intention of peace and unity on earth.  This community became a very important space for Bonnie & Carlyle as they transitioned out of the Mormon church, and they connected me with Daniel and the WPG on my first year on the road.

Garden goddess Charlotte giving Source/Water to the land

I left St. George on Monday and headed to see Charlotte and John in La Verkin, UT, two tribesfolk that have made previous cameos on the Tribe blogs, often sharing with us their ever-expanding garden teeming with life out here in the desert.  (see Charlotte give a tour of her garden last June: A Garden Grows in the Desert  )  This year was no different.  The garden has not surprisingly expanded and is starting to border on mini-farm status with the addition of a fish pond and chicken coop, home to 14 chickens!  There is also a 10 foot sunflower that chose to take over the bean teepee and now stands guard over the whole place.  John and Charlotte have helped create such a magical little spot in the middle of their town that provides not only me and their other friends with an abundant place to stop, rest, and be nourished, but also an oasis that intrigues, inspires and uplifts their neighbors and passerbys every day.

John's 3D printer, printing peace

John’s 3D printer, printing peace

Their friend Amber joined us that evening with her two daugthers, Sierra and Isis, as did their friend Kevin that has lived by choice off-the-grid in a tent up a canyon for the past 8 years.  Earth rich, not dirt poor.  Charlotte cooked dinner while John was running the 3D printer he built himself, creating peace sign pendants for each of the guests with completely recycled material.  This technology is getting more and more efficient, more and more accessible, and is not-so-slowly changing our whole economy, putting production in the hands of the people, contributing to our transformation away from such consumers and back into creators.  This is John’s passion, as he is a board member on a group in St. George working to create a Makerspace, which is exactly what it sounds like: a communal space that is accessible and equipped for people to come in and make their own goods, products, and crafts.  (Maker Space)

Music is medicine

After dinner, we gathered in the living room and 5-year old Isis asked me if I would sing her a song.  Well, it doesn’t take much, and our evening soon turned into a serenade/jam session, John busting out his percussion skills on the empty water-jug cajon.  Charlotte sang along while Isis went from listening quietly to dancing and channeling her inner Egyptian goddess with poses and even shadow-art of the winged goddess herself.  Before Amber and her girls left for the evening, Isis even got on the guitar herself, strumming and plucking the strings and humming gently over them about a princess in the desert.

All of these moments, these experiences, are pearls and priceless gems on this necklace of the Tribe of Dreams.  These moments show me more and  more about hospitality and generosity and how we each can be enlivened and excited by coming together in community in whatever ways we can.  These moments inspire me to make new music with higher and higher resonance and vibration, and continue to teach me how to use music in deeper and more diverse ways.  And these moments refresh my dreams and open my heart, reflecting back to me just how much beauty and love there is right here, right now, and we only have to say yes and thank you to experience them, and to perpetuate them.

Last fall, I rode a horse for the first time in my life here in Oregon City at my tribesbrother Max’s family horse ranch.  It was beyond words… to be in communion with such truly magnificent creatures brings one right into the present moment.

The horse people are medicine people, through and through.

Since I saw him last, Max bought a sweet little house a few minutes down the road from his family’s ranch and moved there with his partner Becca and her young daughter.

Max's crowing jewel

Max’s crowing jewel

He also discovered float tanks.

When Max finds something that resonates with him, his immense passion is unleashed, and floating has done just that.  He was so excited about what he experienced in those tanks that he bought his own float tank and has aligned his vision for his life with turning his home into a wellness center with floating as the centerpiece and spreading the gospel of the float.  He now formally refers to his house as The Float Home.

I had heard of these sensory deprivation float tanks in which you can see nothing and hear nothing, floating in water with such a high salt content that you feel like you are out of the force of gravity.  I had heard many vague descriptions of the possible experiences people can have, from relaxation to physical and emotional healing to induced visionary states, but I had never actually seen one of these tanks or entered into one myself.  Max explained that the salt in the water infuses the body with much needed magnesium, which our people are usually quite deficient in, as well as pulls excess toxins out of our skin.  He told us that floating on a regular basis has created such a sense of peace and surrender in his life, a sense of physical, emotional, and mental wellness, and a pervasive feeling of accetpance of all that is.  How’s that for some selling points?!?

Well, if it is up to Max, every human being would be floating on the regular, so he invited us to come to his home and float before leaving Oregon, and I definitely cold not pass that up.

Float tank open and ready for me

I was immediately excited when I saw that the tank was a pyramid shape!  Good things happen energetically in pyramids, one of the most imporant designs of sacred architecture.  And it also was nice to see how simple it was because over the years my imagination had created these mysterious float tanks to be quite the elaborate and strange contraptions, but turns out they are simply canvas pyramind baths.

Max showed me to the shower so I could bathe before and after floating, told me to go in with no expectations, to get out whenever I felt like it, and then left me to have my first float.  The room was dark with just a candle burning, and the flap to the tank was open and waiting.  I took off my towel, crawled in, and closed the flap behind me.

Well, I must say that what happened in there has definitely sold me on float tanks being a legitimate tool in the realms of healing, wellness, and relaxation.

It was total darkness, and as my ears were under the water, pretty much silence outside of the sounds of my own breath and the movement of the water, which was so salty that it held and supported my whole body, head included, no effort on my part required.  The front third of my body, as well as my face, were out of the water and there was no need to flex one single muscle to support myself.  It was interesting to observe the parts of my body I hold clenched or flexed, even when I think I am fully relaxing and letting go, and there was definitely an adjustment period of checking in with different parts of my body, particularly my legs, back, and neck, in order to truly release all tension, surrender, and trust the water to hold me.

Because the water is at room temperature, after just a few minutes in there, it feels more like floating in space with no gravity than it feels like floating in water.  And as I voyaged into space, I felt peacefully alone with my Self.  Totally supported and safe.  At some point, I began to sound.  It was unintentional at first, just a low rumble that rose up from my throat and reverberated in my head, but it felt so good that I continued to do so.  There is a way to make sounds in the water that were likely almost inaudible to anyone outside the tank, but because sound is vibration, it can be heard internally, vibrating inside the body, and the water is the perfect conduit for such sounds, literally creating a sound bath of my own making.

photo (12)I felt the whale spirit strong within me as I sang gently, filling the waters with vibrations charged with the intentions of love and wellness, therefore charging the very waters themselves.  I saw visions of pairing these tanks with sound healers, finding a way for the patient to float while the sound healer sat outside the tank, somehow piping the live, gentle sound medicine into the waters.  Also visions of piping in whale song, such ancient, pure, perfect music medicine.

I met a woman in Williams, OR last fall that told a group of us the following story:

“There is a creature on this planet that spends its entire life singing.  It travels in families, and each family has its own unique song.  These creatures use their family song to find one another when they get lost or separated.  Each time a new baby is born, the baby begins to occasionally interject a new note into the song that was never there before.  The rest of the family ignores it for a while, continuing to sing their ancestral song as they had been before.  But the new one just keeps singing that new note here and there.  Soon enough, all the other members of the family begin to include this new note into their family song, forever changing and evolving it.  These creatures live within a co-created dream, a co-created song, a co-created story. These creatures are whales.”

As I continued to float, I began to see/feel/understand what was going on in these tanks and why they have such potential to offer healing. The tank allows the body to be in a total state of relaxation, ease, and comfort, and most likely the floater is conscious while this is happening.  Usually, when our bodies are in such a state, we are unconscious.  As a result of pairing of this specific state of being with being conscious, an inner environment is created that is most conducive to activating the immune system and unleashing and supporting the floater’s innate ability to repair, renew, and heal one’s own body.

We each have this capability, and any and every tool that assists us in returning to our inherent state of empowered self-healing is not only welcome, but needed at this point in the journey of our species.

Backyard at The Float Home

Backyard at The Float Home

Time is lost track of very easily when voyaging through the cosmos and the depths of the oceans, but it appears my float lasted just about exactly an hour.  I got out, took a shower, and found my way out into the expansive backyard.  The sun was shining.  The air fresh.  The earth vibrating her perfect harmonic vibration.  I just sat myself down on the earth in the grass and breathed and received the warmth and light of the sun deeply into my being.

Max, although obviously a huge advocate of floating, always tells everybody before they float, “No expectations,” which I find to be pretty essential and hugely beneficial for all of life’s experiences, and it definitely rings true here too.  It is relaxing, yes.  It is healing, yes.  But the effects of the power of this tool lie in the subtlety, a place our people have long been overlooking.  There was no, “Oh my god!” revelations or startling visions or drastic difference in energy level after one float.  But there was a sublte depth and availability to my own vitality and life force.  A bit more finely tuned harmony with the earth beneath me.  And a bit deeper experience of presence.

And this is exactly why Max has named this place “The Float Home.”

Yes, his home is the place to float, but PRESENCE is home.  HERE is home.  NOW is home, in the truest sense.  And this tool is a beautiful, gentle, restful way for each of us to FLOAT HOME.

****If you are in the Portland, OR area and you are interested in visiting The Float Home, please get in touch with Max via his new Page for the space on facebook.  Also, if you could visit the page, “Like” it, and even share it, it would certainly help support this beautiful brother, his family, and this offering to humanity from their hearts.
